History

The Parson Woodforde has a rich history. The building impressively dates back as far as 1827 and wasn't always called The Parson Woodforde...

Opening in 1845 as the Five Ringers, it was renamed The Parson Woodforde as recently as 1987 after a certain Mr James Woodforde became somewhat of a local legend!

James Woodforde

James Woodforde was born in 1740 at the Parsonage in Somerset, the son of Reverend Samuel Woodforde, Rector of Ansford and Vicar of Castle Cary.

He left Somerset to study at Oxford in 1758 and later became a Fellow and Sub-Warden of the New College which led him to Weston Longville, Norfolk when he obtained college living in 1774.

For nearly 45 years he kept a diary recording his relatively ordinary life in 18th century rural England, but his love for food and drink really shone through in his entries.

We share the Parson's passion for good food and good drink so what better way to reveal the wonders of his life and his diaries than through the pub.

We hope to bring you a little bit of Norfolk history in our traditional freehouse and restaurant.
